Piggly Wiggly Ground Beef
Certain Piggly Wiggly ground beef may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Two people contracted confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 after eating ground beef purchased at Piggly Wiggly stores in Monroe and Sister Bay, Wisconsin. The PFGE patterns (genetic fingerprints) of the E. coli involved in the two cases match, meaning a common source caused both cases of E. coli.
In response to this finding, the owner of the stores, Fresh Brands Distributing Inc., (doing business as Piggly Wiggly) announced a Piggly Wiggly ground beef (hamburger) recall affecting its Wisconsin-based Piggly Wiggly stores. The ground beef affected by the recall includes “"ground chuck" and "certified angus beef ground round 85 percent lean," with sell-by dates from July 15 through August 5, 2007.
If consumers still have any of the recalled ground beef, it is most likely in the freezer. Freezing does not kill E. coli bacteria. If you have any of the recalled ground beef in your freezer and no one has eaten any of it in the last 10 days, return in to a Piggly Wiggly store for a refund. If not, wait for 10 days from the time it was eaten, and then return it. DO NOT EAT ANY OF THE RECALLED PIGGLY WIGGLY GROUND BEEF.
